Pilgrimage to Fatima, Santiago and Avila

 

9 Day Itinerary

 

Day 1: Depart USA

Start your journey aboard an overnight flight from Newark airport. Meals will be served.

 

Day 2: Fatima

The group will arrive in Lisbon where there will be a panoramic sightseeing tour of Portugal’s capital city from the deluxe motorcoach, passing by the main avenues, "downtown" with the Rossio and Comercio squares, continue with a drive to the Alfama, the oldest quarter of Lisbon, to visit the Church of St. Anthony to celebrate Mass and the nearby St. Anthony Museum and the Cathedral.  Then proceed to the monumental district of Belem to see the Belem Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries and the Jeronimos Church.  In the afternoon depart for Fatima, one of the most famous Marian Shrines in Europe. Later in the afternoon, visit some of the highlights of Fatima including the Capelinha (also known as the “Chapel of the Apparitions”) as well as the Basilica. This basilica contains, among other things, the tombs of two of the children of Fatima, Jacinta and Francisco. Enjoy the remainder of the evening free. Dinner at your hotel and overnight in Fatima. Day 3: Fatima

In the morning the group will be escorted by their expert guide and will visit the small village of Aljustrel, home of Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, the three children who witnessed the Apparitions of the Blessed Mother starting in 1917.  The group will then visit Valinhos, where Our Lady appeared in August of that year as well as the parish church where the children were baptized and where family members were buried in the cemetery.  Enjoy a free afternoon to explore Fatima on your own, shop for religious articles and other souvenirs, or spend time in private devotion. An optional video presentation on the history of Fatima will be offered in the evening at the Consolata Fathers Center. Also, participate in the Candlelight Procession and Evening Rosary (in season). Enjoy dinner and overnight in Fatima. (B,D)

 

Day 4: Fatima (Optional Batalha, Alcobaca & Nazare)

Enjoy a day at leisure Fatima or if you wish take part in an OPTIONAL side  trip will be made available to make a visit and tour the famous monasteries of Batalha, Alcobaca as well as spend some time at leisure in Nazare, a quaint fishing village with lunch on your own. Upon returning to Fatima for the evening, participate in the Candlelight Procession and Evening Rosary (in season). Dinner and overnight in Fatima. (B,D)

 

Day 5: Fatima / Santiago de Compostela

Early morning departure to Santiago de Compostela. En route, stop in the religious city of Braga, Portugal for a visit to the  “Holy Mountain of Sameiro” and Bom Jesu.  Continue to Santiago de Compostela. Balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Santiago. (B,D)

 

Day 6: Santiago de Compostela

The group will take part in an orientation tour of one of Europe’s most spectacular basilicas, the Cathedral of St. James. Also visit the Plaza del Obradoiro, Archbishop’s Palace, and the Rajoy Palace, presently being used as the city hall. Dinner and overnight in Santiago. (B,D)

 

Day 7: Santiago de Compostela / Medina de Campo / Avila

After breakfast at the hotel depart Santiago for the journey to Avila, the City of Kings and of Saints, completely encircled by 11th century walls. This is the birthplace of St. Theresa one of the greatest mystics of the Church. En route, stop in Medina del Campo. Visit the Carmelite Monastery. Enjoy dinner at your hotel and overnight in Avila. Day 8: Avila

The walled city of Avila is most famous for being the home of St. Teresa, one of only three female doctors of the Church. Avila's atmosphere has changed very little since the days of St. Theresa, to whom the city is dedicated. St. Theresa the great mystic, was the first woman to be named a Doctor of the Church. In the morning we will visit the city of Avila: the Cathedral, which contains many of St. Theresa relics; The crypt of the Convento of La Santa, built on the site of the house where she was born, is home to the most comprehensive museum dedicated to her life, and La Encarnacion Convent, the first convent she found. Dinner and overnight in Avila. (B,D)

 

Day 9: Avila / USA

Depart for Madrid Airport in the morning and arrive U.S. same day. (B)
